Tom Smith is a Manchester based cornet player who has recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with First Class Honours.
Brought up in Cornwall, Tom first picked up the cornet at the age of nine as part of Camborne Youth Band under MD Alan Pope (BEM). from the age of 14, Tom also became a member of various county youth ensembles such as the Cornwall Youth Orchestra, Brass Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra. Two years later, Tom took part in his first course with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, working his way up the ranks and working with some of the biggest names in brass over the next few years.
In 2018, Tom moved up to Manchester to begin his studies under the tuition of Richard Marshall and Roger Webster. During his degree, Tom worked his way up the Yorkshire banding scene playing with bands such as Poynton, Pemberton and Grimethorpe, before landing the position of Principal Cornet at the Brighouse and Rastrick Band in 2020, where he currently sits today.
Since 2020, Tom has been a performing artist with Besson Brass, playing on a 2028 Prestige.
He also has a passion for music technology and throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic produced multitrack recordings that can be found on the Tom Smith cornet YouTube channel.
Tom is also a founding member of Northern Quarters Brass Quartet, with whom he directed the production of a debut EP in 2022, mixing and mastering the project independently.
Since graduating in July 2022, Tom has started to discover his passion for teaching, and is now an online brass tutor with Your Space Music Lessons, and has also recently been appointed as a brass tutor with Barnsley Music Service.
Tom plays on a Denis Wick 4 mouthpiece and is proud to be a Denis Wick Artist.
